Last week was about Don Knotts got his star on Hollywood Walk of Fame. This episode we get to hear bits of the audio from the luncheon held following the star ceremony.

We start off with John Ritter talking about seeing The Andy Griffith Show for the first time. Having gone to church with Andy, he enjoyed the show but recalls that Barney was the character that he loved.

Andy Griffith then speaks about his good friend Don Knotts. They have known one another since they were 30 years old. Andy says that the five years with Don on The Andy Griffith Show were the best years of his life.

Finally, Don says, "Thank you" to all those that helped him get where he is. I can say, from all of us, THANK YOU Don Knotts.

The audio is a bit hard to hear and you will heard glasses clinking and laughter of those in attendance. I hope you can enjoy what you can hear as it certainly is rare audio and I wanted to share it with you.

Many of you might remember Don Knotts appearing on The New Scooby-Doo Movies aired back in 1972 and in reruns every since. He was on two different "movies" that year and it was easy to tell that the cartoon character was Don Knotts.

There's a new cartoon called "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated" that just started last week and the first episode was titled "Beware the Beast from Below." I mention this because the crowd at the beginning of the episode had standing there, front and center, the Don Knotts character from back in the 1970's.

Tonight we look at Barney's Magic Badge. I say magic because it appears and disappears from his uniform often throughout the episode.

In "Andy and the Gentleman Crook", legendary con artist Gentleman Dan Caldwell arrives for a stopover in the Mayberry jail and quickly beguiles Aunt Bee, Opie, and Barney with his charm and sophistication. When Barney is left alone to watch him, Caldwell reels him into his web, takes his gun, and manages to escape. Before he reaches the courthouse door, Andy walks in with Aunt Bee and Opie, who are able to see through Caldwell's charismatic veneer.

Andy and the Gentleman Crook
* Filmed: 21
* Aired: 21
* Original Air Date: 1961/02/27

While waiting for the arrival of Gentleman Dan, Barney works to clean the courthouse. Somehow, during all the cleaning, Barney's badge begins to come and go from his uniform. It first leaves as Barney goes into the back room just before Dan arrives at the courthouse (time 8:27) and remains gone until he leaves the back room (time 8:51).

Barney's badge stays put until he has locked up Mr. Caldwell and begins to talk to him through the bars of the jail cell (time 11:01) and asks for an autograph. The badge returns as Barney finishes his conversation with Dan (time 12:04).

It isn't until later in the episode when Dan steals Barney's gun and it about to make a get away (time 21:02). It's hard to see the badge missing while Barney is still standing inside the cell but when he exits (time 21:31) it is very easy to see. Finally Barney's badge returns (time 22:44) and remains.

This is the final segment of the 1991 Opryland press conference. I took a couple of weeks off between the third segment of the press conference and this one. If you missed any of the first 3 part, or have forgotten them, you'll want to drop back by and give a listen to episodes 73, 76, & 77.

George Lindsey, Don Knotts, Betty Lynn, Maggie Peterson, Rodney Dillard, and Jack Prince all have things to say during this segment. Some of the question are hard to hear and the audio isn't perfect but we're just lucky to have this tape recording of the press conference.

Many thanks to Jim Clark, Presiding Goober of "The Andy Griffith Show" Rerun Watchers Club (TAGSRWC) headquarters for allowing us to have this piece of history to share with all the fans.

I've been getting a good bit of listener comments and questions over the last several weeks so I thought I would try and run through some of them this week.

I don't pretend to be an expert in all things Mayberry so I may not have the answer to all the questions. Hopefully you will be able to help me where I fall short on being able to provide what your fellow listeners are asking for. Feel free to drop me a voice mail to let us all hear the answers you can provide.

Answers or not...let's have some Mayberry fun in tonight's show.

There was recently an online chapter meeting of the "Who's Been Messin' Up the Bulletin Board (WBMUTBB)?" Chapter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club. As part of that meeting, chapter members discussed what Don Knotts had meant to them as we drew close to the 4th anniversary of his passing away back on February 24, 2006.

In order of appearance you will hear from WBMUTBB? members "Aunt Bee (of IL)", Mike Peacock, Jewell Kutzer, Ron "Emmett" Blankenship, MariEllen, and Vicki Pillow. These wonderful Mayberry fans share what many of us feel and enjoy as we watch the performances of Mr. Knotts.

We also have a voice mail and some e-mail listener feedback for you to enjoy.

This is the first of a three part interview with David "The Mayberry Deputy" Browning. David is the Barney Fife tribute artist who appears at Mayberry Days each year and at other Mayberry events throughout the country. David was THE Barney who Don Knotts would request to open his "An Evening with Don Knotts" shows as "Barney." That alone says a lot about the David and his portrayal of the Mayberry deputy character.

In this segment of the interview with David he speaks about how he started as The Mayberry Deputy and about working with Mr. Knotts.

Remembering Don Knotts.
It was on February 24th 2006 when the world lost a wonderful man. Mr. Knotts name at birth was Jesse Don Knotts and he was born on July 21st 1924 in Morgantown, WV. He passed away at 81 years of age on February 24, 2006.

We were all sad to see Don Knotts leave us but I don't want to dwell on remembering the day he passed so much as I want to celebrate the thing he did in life and the joy he continues to bring to millions each day through the character of Barney Fife. Sure....there are other characters he played and he deserves credit for them as well but this is, after all, a Mayberry podcast so lets talk about "Barney."

Don Knotts left this earth in 2006 but we will never be without the love, laughter, and joy that he continues to provide us all whenever we watch him perform or remember performances of the past.

Thank you Don Knotts for everything.
