Allan,

I checked out the episode "Andy's Investment" in season 8 and could not see anywhere that Andy took out his bankbook. They talked a lot about money but didn't show this. At least not in the DVD I have.

Allen - first of all, I love the podcast. I've missed a few lately - need to catch up, but I love listening to all the topics you come up with. I've been a member of the TAGSRRWC since pretty close to its inception. Can't imagine a day without at least one TAGS episode!

As to your question on whose bank book it was, I have an even different take on it. I've always assumed it was Opie's bank book that was either already set up by Andy, or was started by Andy because of Opie's found treasure. Just the way Andy says it 'Ain't that the saddest bank book you ever saw...'. It seems out of character for Andy to be talking about his own bank book that way. Just doesn't sound like he would say that about his own bank book, the way he said it. And as far as it being Parnell Rigsby's, Opie found the 'change purse' by the side of the road. That bank book would have had to have been IN the change purse. That doesn't seem to make sense either.

So I've always thought that Andy was talking about Opie's bank book, newly set up by Andy.

I love all the details of the shows. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about these things! Thanks again for all your great work, Allen!

Allan,
Loved the podcast tonight. It is always so great to hear the actual voices of the cast members. I became a bit melancholy when Betty Lynn talked about wanting to be at the set when others were working. The reality of it being a TV production hit me. The program is always so real and the characters are such a part of our lives that it is almost impossible to think about the shows being filmed in small segments and then being put together to make an episode. Mayberry and its people are so real to me that I just can't think of it as a TV production. Looking forward to hearing more from cast members. Glad you mentioned about Don Knotts being there and just not saying anything about that question. I was wondering why we didn't hear from him. What a great thing to have those interviews recorded so we can all enjoy them for years to come.

Allan, I so enjoyed the interview with Jean Carson. My only complaint is that I wish it had been longer! I never had the privilege of meeting Jean, but it seems that those who did always had complimentary comments about her. I think it speaks highly of Jean that the three episodes of TAGS she appeared in are some of the most memorable of the series and that fans remember her so well and love her characterizations. It's nice to know that she really appreciated her fans. It strikes me as almost funny that she would assume most people would not remember her roles on TAGS. Just the way she delivered the line "Hello, doll" was unforgettable! I remember sending Jean a get-well card to her during her last illness, and I was so sorry to learn of her passing. I understand she was a Christian, so even though I was unable to meet her during her earthly life, I look forward to meeting her one day in heaven.

A little off topic, but listening to the sponsor commercial for TNAGS made me think of Ralphie Parker getting soap poisoning from Lifebuoy soap in the movie 'A Christmas Story.'

I'm glad that at TNAGS Rerun Watchers Club wasn't formed - only because it doesn't have the same ring as TAGSRWC. haha

That was very interesting, Allan. I don't even recall watching "The New Andy Griffith Show" when I was a kid, but I can't imagine that my family wouldn't have tuned it in. Perhaps my inability to remember the show is the result of its very brief run and the fact that it didn't go into reruns. So I am glad that you chose to talk about it on one of your podcasts. I agree that it would have been odd to see Goober and Emmett being friends with a "different" Andy! And seeing Don Knotts as a Barney-like character, but not being Barney! Sounds like Andy was trying to recapture some of the magic of Mayberry with this show. Too bad that it failed. But how blessed we are that the "real" Mayberry is still going strong after all these years both on TV and on DVD.

I hope that you'll continue to enjoy the show even after listening to the 12 plus hours of me talking that you've already heard.
Allen,

I bought an iPod Touch about 8 weeks ago and found your podcasts. I wanted to listen to all of them before I e-mailed you. I listened to 5-10 podcasts each week, at least one per day. After listening to you daily (or more) for 8 weeks, I feel as though I have a new friend. Thanks for the great podcasts. I love them.

Thank you for pointing out the Magical Changing Christmas Card. Without your pointing it out I certainly wouldn't have thought of doing this episode.

The "Away in a Manger" sung by Elinor Donahue is certainly one of my favorites. I only wish there had been more Christmas music on TAGS.

Merry Christmas!

When I looked at the screen captures you posted on the Facebook page, I thought, "Say, it looks like Andy is holding the original Hilda Mae card" in the shot where Barney is holding a different card. Listening to the podcast, I realized this was the case. So thanks for pointing that out, Allan.

I'm glad you included Ellie and Andy's version of "Away in a Manger" to end the podcast. The more I hear it, the more I love it. It's so simply, yet beautifully, done which is so appropriate for the song. I love Christmas music and have many different recorded versions of "Away in a Manger," but this is one of my favorites.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Great Podcast. I bet the magic of the Christmas Card must have been the same magic that kept messing up Barney's hair and combing it again, and the same magic that made his badge disappear and reappear when Gentleman Dan stayed as a guest.

Allan, I really enjoyed the podcast, even though the link to Mayberry was indirect. But you did a good job of pointing out the similarities, and it will be interesting to see if anyone has insight as to whether Mayberry's Floyd Lawson may have been inspired by Gildersleeve's Floyd Munson.

You are apparently new to Old Time Radio. Even though these radio programs were from my parents' era and not my own, I have been an OTR fan for many years. I have several episodes of "The Great Gildersleeve," as well as many of its parent show, "Fibber McGee and Molly." The '30's, '40's, and (to a lesser degree) '50's provided a lot of good, wholesome entertainment through these radio programs which allowed the listener to act out the scenes in his own imagination. Comedies tend to be my favorites and, besides the aforementioned, I especially like "Burns and Allen," "Amos and Andy," "The Easy Aces," "The Aldrich Family," Eve Arden's "Our Miss Brooks," "The Jack Benny Program," and Lucille Ball's "My Favorite Husband," which spawned the hugely popular TV series "I Love Lucy." In fact, I have transferred my love of OTR to my 10-year-old daughter, who listens to shows on her MP3 player. For a time, she played "Our Miss Brooks" and "My Favorite Husband" shows so often that our whole family could quote lines from them! She is now on an "Archie Andrews" kick.

Like "The Andy Griffith Show" of TV, many of these OTR shows were good, clean family entertainment, well written and well acted. Though some were especially noted for puns and one-liners ("Fibber McGee and Molly" comes to mind), most were situation comedies and utilized recurring characters that added much to the show's appeal, like TAGS.

Hope you enjoy exploring more of the world of Old Time Radio, Allan!

Allan, I really enjoyed the podcast, even though the link to Mayberry was indirect. But you did a good job of pointing out the similarities, and it will be interesting to see if anyone has insight as to whether Mayberry’s Floyd Lawson may have been inspired by Gildersleeve’s Floyd Munson.

You are apparently new to Old Time Radio. Even though these radio programs were from my parents’ era and not my own, I have been an OTR fan for many years. I have several episodes of “The Great Gildersleeve,” as well as many of its parent show, “Fibber McGee and Molly.” The ’30’s, ’40’s, and (to a lesser degree) ’50’s provided a lot of good, wholesome entertainment through these radio programs which allowed the listener to act out the scenes in his own imagination. Comedies tend to be my favorites and, besides the aforementioned, I especially like “Burns and Allen,” “Amos and Andy,” “The Easy Aces,” “The Aldrich Family,” Eve Arden’s “Our Miss Brooks,” “The Jack Benny Program,” and Lucille Ball’s “My Favorite Husband,” which spawned the hugely popular TV series “I Love Lucy.” In fact, I have transferred my love of OTR to my 10-year-old daughter, who listens to shows on her MP3 player. For a time, she played “Our Miss Brooks” and “My Favorite Husband” shows so often that our whole family could quote lines from them! She is now on an “Archie Andrews” kick.

Like “The Andy Griffith Show” of TV, many of these OTR shows were good, clean family entertainment, well written and well acted. Though some were especially noted for puns and one-liners (“Fibber McGee and Molly” comes to mind), most were situation comedies and utilized recurring characters that added much to the show’s appeal, like TAGS.

Hope you enjoy exploring more of the world of Old Time Radio, Allan!

Allan,
Just want to add a few thoughts to what I left on your voice mail. We are in the middle of a heavy snowstorm tonight here in Wisconsin so your Podcast tonight was really a special treat. As I said on the phone The Great Gildersleeves is my favorite Old Time Radio Program. But with all the times I listened I never gave much thought to the similarities to Mayberry, but after hearing your comments they became so obvious. Your clip tonight too about the sleighride brought back some very wonderful memories of my high school days. In the fall and winter we would quite often go on hayrides. One of the kids who lived on a farm would load a hay wagon with bales of hay and hook it up to the tractor and away we would go. We spent the night sitting on the hay with a pretty girl next to us ( well sometimes a pretty one sat next to me) and we would sing and have the time of our lives. Afterwards there was usually a bonfire followed by hot chocolate and hot dogs. What I wouldn't do to be able to relive one of those days. But thanks to you and the digest and now your Podcasts many of us can relive some very special times by your triggering some often forgotten hidden memories.

My wife and I have throughly enjoyed your podcast since we found out about your service last september 09, after we attended our first festival.
We live in Porter, Okla. Not much news reaches this area until it's all over. Keep up the good work. May all you and your's have a very good thanksgiving. God bless.

Enjoyed this podcast as much as the last ones with Neal. I appreciate all the time it took for you both to put this together. I have a copy of Mayberry 101, and I really enjoy getting to read all the behind-the-scenes info he shares. Would love to see a Mayberry 101 Volume 1½.

I'd love to hear a podcast with a visit from 'The Darling Boys'. Hope it works out for you to have them.

Thanks for another enjoyable time in Mayberry, Floyd. Blessings!

Allan,

I found Two Chairs around episode 3 or 4 and back up and listened to the ones I missed so I have essentially been with you the whole year. Keep it up you are doing a great job. I look forward to you every week.

Podcasts I like:

LifeChurch.tv's Craig Groshel's sermons are great!
John Eldridge and Ransomed Heart -- a podcast for Christian men.
Stardate -- about astronomy -- been airing on public radio for years.
StotyCorps -- also on NPR.
The News from Lake Woebegon -- Garrison Keillor -- need I say more?

We really enjoy listening to the podcast. We really enjoyed hearing Gary Crain. He sounds just like the real Gomer. We will be attending Mayberry Days in Mt Airy NC and look forward to seeing you all once again. Was wondering what all tribute artists will be there this time? Will Gary Crain be there this year? We look forward to seeing each and every one of you during Mayberry Days.

I look forward to visiting one day (hopefully soon).

Ken, I bet if you're good, Marsha will throw some peanuts in the cell and you can jump up and down on them and make your own peanut butter. haha

They had good observations about Mayberry people - you do get an immediate friend, even if you've only met and may not see them ever again. Just good people.

Really enjoyed these special Podcasts with Dave and Marsha. My wife Linda and I have been at the Inn seven times now. We have stayed in all three rooms, My favorite is Opie's room because of all the nostalgic toys and games that are displayed throughout the room. I continue to marvel at the detail one finds within the Bed and Breakfast. On our last visit I was able to wear my Barney Fife uniform and interact with all the other guests. I agree with Dave's comments about the courthouse. That is going to be just a great addition to the Inn. Guests should be aware that Marsha will not serve peanut butter and jelly sandwiches once those doors clang shut.

I really wish I didn't live so far away and could visit in person. You're right...the fireplace stonework (faux) is not to be believed. I'm impressed how Dave was able to construct the large one. Keep up the great work. I always look forward to Wednesdays knowing I got a treat on my computer from the night before.
What a great story, Allan. I'm certain that the Lord gives us those opportunities from time to time. I'm thankful that you responded to his nudging. I'm also thankful that you do so much for the Mayberry community. I have a hunch He plays a role in that too. Keep the great podcasts coming!

Hey Allan - a couple items mentioned in Podcast 33 about "such goings on" in Mount Airy, so I thought I would share a couple links to photos of the Andy Griffith Museum building under construction as well as photos of items Samatha mentioned that Andy had given Emmett for the collection.

Construction photos of the Andy Griffith Museum are at:

http://surryart.ipower.com/main/displaypage.php?page=news/agmconstructionindex.html

Hobart sends me photos every few weeks, so that page will be updated as the building progresses through September.

Photos of the items from the TAGS set are at:

Thanks for all you do!

Wow Floyd, I remember that you did Gunsmoke and some other Radio work, but I didn't realize you still had the gift of gab for radio. Thanks for sharing your talent and your hilarious stories! My sympathy's to your wife for you antics. Put me down for 2:00 Thursday. A little of the sides..and a little time for side-splitting stories. Can't wait.

All of this time I thought the answer was "I see your drawers" so now I'm better informed. Am enjoying the podcasts. They're better than sourwood honey.

Calvin Coolidge is a mainstay in our home - we constantly refer to him and contribute any and all quotes to him except for Jesus.

Between me and you. I'm like Andy - can't stand Roger either. I think about him every spring when I plant petunias.

Keep up the good work.

Hearing Russel (Floyd) Hiatt's interview brought back memories of one of my visits to Mt. Airy and getting a haircut from him. His personality and love of people is the thing that makes Mt. Airy turn into Mayberry for all the fans that go to Mayberry Days . Keep doing what you love and enjoy the podcast are fun to hear .

Hi Allan,
I think a person that has different personalities and voices inside their head are
called skizophreniacs , at least I think that's what Barney called them.

Great job, I thoroughly enjoyed the episode, it was like the good old days when you would sit by the radio and hear a program and you could see the characters in your head. And a great big AT A BOY to Joe Gritton, I have read some of his fan fiction on Mayberry.com and he writes in the style of TAGS and it is so much fun to read beacause you can hear and see the characters in your head. (with all this head talk, maybe I'm the skizophreniac)

Keep up the good work and deffinately do more skits and stories.

It was nice to hear the interview with David. About 13 or 14 years ago, when I was working for Lynchburg PD in Virgina, I believe it was him, David, I saw at a festival in Vinton, Virginia just outside of Roanoke. I always wondered why he called himself "The Mayberry Deputy" so thanks for shedding light on that -- I think I was one of the only ones not to know that...lol.

Thanks for keeping the podcast going Allen. I am sure it is a lot of work but I hope the joy you get from it and our appreciation of your work help fuel you on days you may be running low. I'm glad to hear so many others express thier thoughts and appreciation.

Please continue to remember me and my guys in prayer here. Violence is has been picking up around here. We believe it is partly due to the increased troop presence. We had a rocket come through our supply room just the other day too - - just so happened no one was there and no one hurt. Internet is very slow here but we still get to hear the podcasts. :)

Thanks again, God Bless,

It's been great to hear you and David on the podcasts. I've been blessed to spend some time with David and Patty both as the Deputy and away from the stage. They're both just great folks and we love'em so.

I wanted to add a little to the phone message I left earlier. I've really enjoyed hearing from the stars and tribute artists but I think it'd be great to hear from some real Mt. Airy residents too. This past year at Mayberry Days I had a unique and wonderful experience.

I decided that I'd go into the Snappy Lunch for one of their fantastic pork chop breakfasts as everyone was waiting for the parade to start early on Saturday morning. After I'd ordered Mr. Dowell came by so I told him good morning and mentioned how good it was to see him. Well, he sat down next to me and we began to chat. He's such a nice man.

He told me about the history of the restaurant, about how his family had been in business in Mt. Airy for many years. Even after my meal came he told me not to let it get cold, he didn't mind talking while I was eating! I tell you that was a real treat.

I've also had several haircuts at Floyd's and visited with Emett Forest at the visitor center. I know those who haven't been able to get to Mt. Airy and meet these fine folks in person would appreciate hearing from the real residents who insipried our favorite fictional hometown, Mayberry.

And as I mentioned the Miles' of Mayberry on Main are living my dream. Pulling up stakes from the Hoosier state, opening a business and living in Mt. Airy. They're great people too. I think it'd be interesting to hear their comments on how that decision has affected their lives.

Thanks again, Allan for your contributions to keeping the Mayberry spirit alive. You're a real prince!

Hi Allan: I really enjoyed the interview with David Browning. Next to Don Knotts he is my favorite Barney Fife, The first time I saw him at Mayberry Days I thought to myself this guy is real good!! I also was privilege to see Don Knotts and David Browning perform together, the best of both worlds!! David & Patty his wife are both great people and are willing to help where needed. I started a ministry in 2007 as Fearless Fife and needed a Barney cap, I had looked everywhere so I called David up and left a message about trying to find a cap. Patty called back and gladly gave me the information I needed. May God continue to bless David & Patty Browning. Thanks, Ronnie

Allan: What a fantastic interview with David Browning. My favorite remembrance of David is back when I was practicing medicine. Phil Lee (aka Ernest T. Bass) was a drug rep that called on my office. We had gotten to be good friends and he was the reason I had started going to Mayberry Days. I had always sort of been in awe of David and his talent and one day when I came into the office David was standing there in full Barney Fife get up. He was accompanying Phil that day to help promote his product. Meeting him in private that day and talking for a while was a thrill for me (IT WAS BIG!). Of course we had to take the obligatory photograph. How lucky we all are to have him. Bob

Hey, Allan...

Great interview! I've always liked Bernard Fox, he has just always seemed like such a gentleman. Maybe it's the accent! Still, it was great to hear him in the interview, because it appears he's just as nice as I always thought he would be.

I really do enjoy these podcasts. It's a great idea, and I'm sure all Mayberrians enjoy them as much as I do. Keep 'em coming!

Thank you so much for this interview! I stumbled across it today. Uncle Kenneth has never been big on self-promotion. :)

It was so nice to hear some of his stories again. He has quite a few. Every time he comes home from an event he has new ones. He has been "Otis" so long I sometimes forget when he wasn't. It was nice to hear how he got started.

I've helped him as I could through the years with different events. I've always been impressed with the people portraying these characters. Ya'll truly have a great group of people.

Thanks so much!

Thanks for this podcast, Allan! The pics, links and video are incredible! My goal is to visit there someday soon. I would rather drive cross-country as opposed to flying, just so I could carry whatever I wanted with me. The pics were emotional for me, in that they made me want to visit what's left of TAGS in Ca.

Thanks again!!!

Hi, Allan..

I just listened to the interview with Elinor Donahue, and enjoyed it very much. What a delightful person she is! It would be just wonderful if she would join us on the cruise in October.

Keep these interviews going, especially if everyone is as nice as "Miss Ellie".

I think it's amazing that the spirit of Mayberry can bring some joy to our men and women heroes in Afghanistan. Ernest T. was right when he said "can't do enough for our boys in khaki". Thanks so much to Paul and all of them as they serve. I pray they all come home safely. And, I'm sure the Milo boys would be proud, too.

You are so thoughtful to spend all this time preparing these great podcasts for us. I agree, we can see you flipping your tie up and combing your barber brush as we listen to Floyd.
Our best to you and yours (sweet Jan) buddy. See ya on the next Cruise to Mayberry.

Great interviews, Alan. Thanks for all you do! I'd go on the Mayberry Cruise if my sensitive stomach didn't set a high water mark at sea level. You wouldn't want me to attrack the sharks. But, hey, I'm right there in it, leaning over the railing, with you all!

I note the most recent political endorsement made by Ron Howard and Andy Griffith, (the "Fonz" of course, is in there, but that's another show).

I didn't think we'd ever see Opie and Andy again in a sketch like that, and it's worth noting.

Best Regards,

Allan,
Just wanted to tell you that I just caught up with the first three podcasts and think they are great! I am finding so much on this site to be good entertainment for me here in Afghanistan - - in an otherwise not so entertaining location. I am looking forward to number 4. I wonder how Mr. Lindsey is doing now? Thanks again and God Bless.

As Andy would say - OUTSTANDING! I'm sure it is a lot of hard work to pull this type of presentation together, but as far as I'm concerned it is worth it. It's always great to hear the actual character's opinions and thoughts on the show. Please do another one - or three.
